Her Name
Kikyou's name is usually mispronounced, misspelled and translated into an incorrect translation. Kikyou's name derives from the name of the Chinese Bellflower also known as the 'kikyo' in Nihon [Japan]. The 'kikyo' flower in Nihon has two very important meanings and a strong symbolism;

  • It is to be thought of a flower of spiritual healing; the fact that the flower is of healing represents Kikyou's abilities in medicine and herbs
  • The name of the flower, kikyo, also translates into 'Unchanging Love'; this portrays Kikyou's relationship with InuYasha

    Rumiko Takakahashi had this to remark on Kikyou's name at the 2004 Anime Exhibition in Nagaswaki, Japan;

    'Kikyou is a very complexe, mystifying character. Her name not only is beautiful but also portrays her character. With its translation of 'Unchanging Love', Kikyou's name presents Kikyou's love for InuYasha and its unwavering devotion and loyalty. The kikyo flower is thought to be of spiritual healing which represents Kikyou's own soul. Kikyou was thought to be one of the powerful priestesses of her time and her purity and soul's-purity was reknowned. She was a beautiful, pure soul that was tragically mislead and abused.'

    Name: Noriko Hidaka [日高のり子]
    Age: 43
    Birthday: May 31, 1962 [1962年5月31日]
    Location: Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan [千代田、東京、日本]

    Review: Noriko Hidaka and her voice talents suit Kikyou from InuYasha perfectly. Her gentle yet firm voice, evident ability to display Kikyou's feelings and thoughts in her tones and her ability to blend her talent into the character are obvious in her acting for the show.

    Not only does she seem to be able to protray Kikyou flawlessly, she creates a realistic sound to her voice that one would assume would be the actual voice of Kikyou.

    Seiyuu-English

    Name: Willow Johnson
    Age: 30
    Birthday: [unknown] in 1975
    Location: British Columbia, Canada

    Review: Willow Johnson does try to create a certain effect to the characer of Kikyou in the English version yet however seems to protray Kikyou as cold, emotionless and sometimes cruel. The tone is very flat and arrogant which is opposite to the character of Kikyou.

    Because of the frosty sound to the voice Willow Johnson has used for Kikyou, the character's personality and identity are misunderstood and usually disliked.
